Fully insured medical plans
A fully insured health plan is the most traditional way to structure an employer-sponsored health plan. With a fully insured plan, the company pays a premium to the insurance carrier. The premium rates for each employee remain fixed for a year.
The insurance carrier collects the monthly insurance premiums from the employer and pays the health care claims on the coverage benefits outlined in the policy purchased.
Covered employees and dependents are responsible for paying any deductible amounts or co-payments, etc., required.
The number of fully-insured carriers in Georgia has dwindled dramatically especially for small groups. There are quite a number of carriers that offer self- and level-funding plans, but only a few fully insured carriers are available for small groups. Currently they are: Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, Kaiser Permanente, and United Healthcare.
